Today’s post will be short because I’m going to enjoy my favourite Halloween tradition tonight. HOCUS POCUS! If you have not seen this magnificent piece of 1993 cinema, you are missing out. It’s a horror-comedy and filled with ridiculousness, but is a fun time all around. It’s obviously going to be dated since its 23 years old now and there are definitely cringe-worthy moments, but overall it’s pretty enjoyable. I think I’ve watched it almost every Halloween.
The basic plot is that in 1693 there were three witches, the Sanderson Sisters, who steal the souls of children to retain their youth. They are executed by the town and come back to life 300 years later when a virgin (the character in question is constantly teased over this fact, which is kind of sad considering he’s only 15-16) lights the black flame candle found in their museum/house. Max, Alison and Dani have to figure out how to save the town from the witches without losing their souls. They are helped along by a cat named Thackery Binx, so was cursed into the cat body by Winifred Sanderson for interfering in the soul-stealing of his little sister Emily.
The stars of the show are Bette Midler (Winifred Sanderson), Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson), Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah Sanderson), Omri Katz (Max Dennison), Thora Birch (Dani Dennison) and Vinessa Shaw (Allison).
There are delightful songs, adorable moments and lots of hilarity.
Totally did not sing this song a million times…
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful Halloween!
